The game of love can be a tough one to win, especially for unemployed, aspiring fashion designer Laurel Welk (Emily Kinney, “The Walking Dead”). Her life is in a transition phase and with the clock running down on her roommate/ best friend getting married, moving out and trying to find a great person to replace her is making her break a sweat.
Talk about sweating, star professional football quarterback Danny Holland (John Reardon, “Tron: Legacy”) has been sidelined with an injury and need of a new assistant. Pile on a crazy schedule, physical therapy and personal duties, he really needs a qualified assistant, pronto. Danny is a bit of an old fashioned guy, to put it mildly, preferring to work with male assistants rather than females.
As luck would have it, Laurel’s new roommate has a job opportunity as a personal assistant to the rich and famous. She’s willing to do anything to bring in an income, even if it means working with difficult people.
When Laurel is assigned to Danny, the last thing he wants is a female assistant, particularly one who knows nothing about football. But the two opposites strike a bargain and agree to work together on a trial basis as he recuperates. While Laurel struggles to master her job, knowing she’s in way over her head, Danny struggles to maintain his star image even though he’s concerned his injury might impact his career.
Things start to get complicated when Lauren and Danny start to break some of the rules of between employee and employer. Can they overcome the penalties of working together and score one for Team Love?
“Love on the Sidelines” is a charming touchdown to score a win in a viewer’s heart. Filled with lots of punny moments, an adorable meet-cute and embracing challenges that come along the way, this is a fan enjoyable film for all. The story is clever, fun and keeps you rooting for the two unlikely lovers. The talent cast is likable, relatable and displays strong chemistry. Even a famous face pops up from the world of sports you may recognize, Joe Theismann as Danny’s father.
