How cool would it be to win the lottery?
Kevin Carson (Bow Wow) is a kid from the projects with a dream. He would love to have his own shoe line, be rich, famous and have a hot girl on his arm. Instead reality is that he’s broke, works at Foot Locker and is secretly in love with his best friend (who’s a girl) but will not own up to it. Kevin’s other best friend, a brother from another mother, is Benny (Brandon T. Jackson). Benny is the typical dreamer but lacks the drive and motivation to get what he wants. What he lacks in drive, he make up with loyalty, street smarts and humor.
While on his way to work, Kevin’s Grandma (Loretta Devine) ask Kevin to stop off and but a lottery ticket, since the jackpot is over $300 million dollars. Just thinking of that amount of money makes you dream of all that you can buy, right? As Benny and Kevin make their way through their neighborhood, they encounter all sorts of blocks that makes Kevin late to work. One of those blocks, a local thug, Lorenzo (Gbenga Akinnagbe ) has been released from prison and wants Kevin to hook him up with free Jordan shoes. Kevin and Benny barely escape and get flack from Kevin’s best friend, Stacie (Naturi Naughton), (the one he secretly loves but doesn’t know it yet), about ignoring those thugs.
Well Kevin had a lot to worry about. Lorenzo hunted him down at work and tried to walk away with a lot of merchandise. The mall cops were called out and Lorenzo tried to frame it all on Kevin, but did not comply. Lorenz was arrested and Kevin was fired from his beloved job.
Feeling down, Kevin goes and gets the lottery tickets using his numbers and another set of numbers he found on a fortune cookie. Well wouldn’t you know that turned into the best desert ever when it made Kevin the newest millionaire in the city.
Unfortunately, Kevin can’t tell anyone and he won over a holiday weekend so he has to get through 3 days until he can claim his prize. A lot can happen 3 days in the projects especially when there is money involved. Will Kevin be able to claim his money scott-free or will he come up against ever test known to man to see where his fortune really lies?
This money made me think about how much power money has over our lives. Especially where big money comes big power with big responsibility. Although sold as first a comedy, it does a good job of showing the greed and animalistic nature when it comes to money. How the one that is the most good hearted person can be turned to an untrusting, selfish person at the turn of a dime.
