Move over Edward Cullen, there’s a new Edward in town.

The year is 2019 and the world is a different place. A genetic plague of some sort a decade ago has turned the majority of the human race into vampires. The ones that escaped the transformation were hunted down, arrested and farmed out for their blood. With the original human species almost extinct, the blood supply is running low and the new vampire race is searching for a blood substitute. Those that have been blood starved start feeding off of themselves and mutate into a weird bat monster before they go crazy and die from starvation. Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) works at one of the largest blood pharmaceutical companies in the world as one of the doctors tasked to find the substitute. The currently blood supply will only last a few more weeks before the whole world starves and chaos ensues. Edward being distressed from the lack of solutions has given up drinking blood himself and now is in the first stages of bat mutation. His younger brother Frankie (Michael Dorman) is part of the military that is tasked to rounding up humans and keeping the peace between vampires. He doesn’t understand why his brother hates being a vampire so much while he delights in the immortality.

One night while driving home, Edward gets into a car crash with a bunch of renegade humans and helps them escape the authorities. The female leader of the human renegades goes back to find Edward and tells him of a possible cure for the blood shortage supply. She leads him to Lionel ‘Elvis’ Cormac (Willem Dafoe) a man with a mysterious past who is well versed in the vampire way of life. Together they all must work together and race the clock to find a cure, dodge the authorities and stay alive.

Daybreakers is the guy’s version of what a vampire movie should be and we’ve come to know and love. It encapsulates what we know as folklore and gives it a new spin. It’s basically the male Twilight. For all the Twilight/Stephenie Meyer fans out there think Twilight meets The Host. This movie is gory, funny in some parts and delivers on the action. Daybreakers is an interesting monster movie that is fueled for today’s audience.

Things to watch for: Some really cheesy one liners, really cool special effects, good twist towards the end.

Who should see this movie: Guys that love things blown up, bloody gory movies, fans of vampire flicks.

See it in the Theater or Rent it on DVD: This is more of a guys night out movie and best seen on the big screen.
